Because They’re Funny (BTF), is a comedy festival from the producers of the American Black Film Festival showcasing BIPOC comedic talent. Now in its second year, the festival is dedicated to propelling a new generation of diverse stand-up comedians to stardom, as well as promoting television and film content in the comedy genre that features people of color.
Curated to appeal to both those within the industry and the comedy-loving public, BTF’s lineup features headline shows, spotlights on up-and-coming comics, films, panels, and master classes.
Kicking off the festival is “BTF Cares,” a gala fundraiser to support Washington DC-based organizations that positively impact diverse communities. Net proceeds from this year’s event will benefit DC Central Kitchen (DCCK), an iconic nonprofit and social enterprise that combats hunger and poverty through job training and creation.
BTF’s flagship event, the “Breakout Comedian of the Year” competition, serves as a platform for uncovering fresh, new BIPOC stand-up comedy talent. Attracting hundreds of entries from across the country, the competition culminates with the top six finalists competing at the festival for the grand prize of $10,000 and the chance to secure representation by a leading Hollywood talent agency.
After being recognized as one of USA Today’s top 10 new events and attracting over 5,200 attendees in its inaugural year, BTF will return to Washington, DC, from September 27-29. Festival events will be held at The Anthem at the Wharf and other city venues.
Because They’re Funny Comedy Festival is a property of Nice Crowd, a leading entertainment company in the live events arena founded by Nicole and Jeff Friday. The event is presented in partnership with Events DC, the official convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia.
