About the Festival

Because They’re Funny (BTF) is the groundbreaking comedy festival from the creators of the American Black Film Festival, spotlighting the brightest BIPOC comedic talent. Hailed by USA Today as one of the top 10 new events of 2023, BTF continues to make its mark in the live events industry, attracting over 4,000 attendees from September 27-29, 2024, to the Wharf a vibrant entertainment hub on Washington, DC’s Southwest waterfront.

Now in its second year, BTF remains committed to its mission of elevating diverse comedy and launching the next generation of comedians of color into the spotlight. Designed for anyone who loves to laugh, the 2024 edition featured electrifying headline performances, the highly anticipated “Breakout Comedian of the Year Competition,” insightful panels, interactive comedy masterclasses, and high-powered networking.

The festival is produced by NICE CROWD, BTF and presented in partnership with Events DC, the official convention and sports authority for the District.
